A large number of people have taken to social media over the past several months with posts, tweets, videos, and pictures about their diets. People are always excited to show off new and improved figures after losing weight, and almost everyone who does so finds themselves rushing to social media to brag to their friends about it. When it comes to losing weight, there are many different programs, plans, exercises, and techniques available. Few work out, so once a person does find a weight loss method that works for them they are eager to share the details of their discovery with the world.

When looking to lose weight and keep it off, most would agree that eating healthy is critical. However, eating healthy is rarely easy, especially for most American’s who live a busy lifestyle at the expense of a healthy one. When you’re away from home, fast food is a fast, easy, and affordable temptation, leading many people seeking a healthy lifestyle astray. Everyone encounters a time where the convenience of a meal on the go outweighs the benefits of cooking at home.

If you find yourself away from home when it’s time for lunch, breakfast, or dinner, locating a fast and healthy restaurant is not easy, but it is possible. If you’re conscientious of what goes into your body, one fast food you can usually count on is a sub sandwich. The contents are innocent enough, with meat, cheese, bread, and vegetables fitting nicely within almost everyone’s dieting objectives. The healthy appeal of sub sandwiches, combined with the need for fast and easy meals on the go, has led to these types of restaurants popping up like daisies across the country. Sub sandwich restaurants Subway, Jimmy John’s and Jersey Mike’s all tout healthy choices for those on a reduced caloric diet, but which of these, if any, is really a healthy choice?

A basic comparison of the classic dieter’s favorite, the turkey sub on wheat bread, shows that Subway has the lowest calorie option of the three. It is also significantly lower in sodium content and cholesterol. Jersey Mike’s has the highest fat content of the three, and also the highest amount of cholesterol. Based on available nutritional information, Subway’s turkey breast on wheat bread is the better choice for those on a diet; however, companies will often try to list things with the lowest possible calories. Nutrition is a numbers game and the statistics will tend to favor the company itself. Sides like mayonnaise, cheese and choice of breads will increase/decrease the amount of fats, sodium, cholesterol and calories in your meal. Someone who is serious about a diet should be looking to cut calories, fat, and sugar out. The best way to do that is to stay away from the aforementioned ingredients, and substitute fresh veggies, mustard, or vinegar. These have no negative impact on the overall nutritional value of the sandwich.

It is important to take a step back and see how the nutritional information is amalgamated. Fresh choices will always be the best. Out of the three chains, Jersey Mike’s is the only one to provide specific, detailed ingredients lists on all of their products. Subway lists those with allergens only and Jimmy John’s lists none at all. Lack of transparency from the Jimmy John’s chain is a point of concern for anyone wanting to lose weight efficiently. Processed meats that are chalk full of nitrates are bad news for your body. Subway and Jersey Mike’s restaurants both use processed meats, but the turkey is free of nitrates in both instances. The breads are also very comparable.

In seeking out which of these three restaurants is the best, I have come to the conclusion that Subway provides a meal that looks good on paper, but Jersey Mike’s is the most honest of the three. To me this matters more, because in order to actually lose weight responsibly, I need to know exactly what it is that I am consuming. For this reason I would choose Jersey Mike’s as the best sandwich shop for a person on the go looking to eat a healthy meal.

At the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards — which were held in Brooklyn on Sunday, August 25 — 20-year-old Miley Cyrus shocked the world, especially the hundreds of thousands of young fans who tuned in to see her latest performance. The young singer was no doubt seeking to boost her media profile through controversy. Cyrus may find, however, that she lost many fans in the process. Someday soon, she might even come to view her borderline-pornographic onstage antics as completely embarrassing.

Cyrus sang her hit song “We Can’t Stop” and then performed a duet of “Blurred Lines” with 36-year-old singer Robin Thicke. During those songs, Cyrus removed her leotard to reveal a flesh-colored latex bikini; her bra and underwear were quite revealing. She also gave the crowd an intense twerking demonstration — twerking, of course, involves bending forward and shaking the hips with great intensity. In addition, Cyrus rubbed against dancers dressed as bears in a sexual manner, and she grabbed Thicke’s private parts at one point. Thicke’s wife was in the audience. Perhaps the most unsettling aspect of Cyrus’s appearance was her tongue. She exhibited the ability to stick it out exceptionally far.

Judging by their stunned expressions, many audience members found the display ugly. Social media reactions were even more intense. For instance, technology writer Mike Elgan wondered on Google Plus if Miley has lost “the ability to keep her tongue in her face”

Others criticized the star’s fashion sense. On Twitter, @whatitsmenej noted that she had only one thought during Miley’s performance:

And Twitter’s ‏@joseduderibe fretted:

Indeed, that vein of humor ran through much of the social media commentary. For example, on the official Miley Facebook fan page, Ron Virginia expressed concern that her movements gave his TV set herpes. Other comments were overwhelmingly negative:

Reddit member mikesaysthis offered a photo called “My cat watching the VMAs, imitating Miley Cyrus” (http://imgur.com/90mu1Xi).

YouTube members could not resist Miley-related comedy either. Jessielou121 provides viewers with this thought, “It’s kind of sad, honestly. You look at her as a role model that so many kids grew up with, and what kind of role model is she turning into now?” in the video “Miley Cyrus & Robin Thicke – MTV VMA’S 2013 PERFORMANCE”

To be fair, not every social media reaction was negative. For instance, HotNewHipHop noted on its Google Plus page that the rapper Juicy J called Miley “the best twerker, hands down”

Even so, the number of people who found Miley’s bra and underwear display at the Video Music Awards ugly and embarrassing far outweighed those who defended the young singer. Perhaps Hugo Câmara summed it up best with his comment on the MTV VMA page, a photo of a child leaning over a toilet bowl.

I am curious to know what you think about all of this. Please leave me your comments below!

This next bit of news should appeal to those of you who are fans of the classic film Risky Business, starring Tom Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay. A small tourist town in Kennebunk, Main is the focus of a lot of media coverage recently after Alex Wright, a 29 year-old Zumba fitness instructor, was accused of running a prostitution business out of her Zumba dance studio in conjunction with her business partner, Mark Strong Sr.

The list of charges compiled by authorities against Alex Wright includes taking money for sex, with 150 men being accused for paying Wright for sexual services. The list is rumored to include many high profile local residents ranging from lawyers, doctors, law enforcement officials, a television personality and other well-known people in town. Police also found meticulous records that Wright kept which indicate she collected over $150,000 in a little over 18 months for her prostitution services.

It is still unclear why, but it appears Wright secretly had been videotaping some of these sexual encounters. Prosecutors have obtained more than 100 hours of video and nearly 14,000 screen shots from seized computers.

Wright has pleaded not guilty to 106 counts including prostitution, violation of privacy, tax evasion and other charges for allegedly providing sex for money at her fitness studio and a nearby one-room office she rented..
Her business partner, 57-year-old Mark Strong Sr., has also pleaded not guilty to 59 counts of promotion of prostitution and violation of privacy. Officials report the two shared a “business and personal” relationship. Among the video footage obtained, it showed Wright and Strong having sex, according to the affidavit.
Wright is the single mother of a young boy, but it is still unclear whether or not she has custody of the boy.
Police have begun issuing summons to Wright’s customers and will be releasing the names of more clients involved in this scandal every other week as more summons are issued. The next batch of names will be released Oct.26.

The first batch of names initially created chaos for some innocent men that shared the same name as the ones on this list. The addresses, ages and other identifying information of the men were withheld after a judge ruled that state law required them to be kept confidential because the alleged sexual encounters may have been videotaped, making the men potential victims of privacy.
The issue is that by only disclosing names, and not more unique information, it will pose real harm to certain innocent men that happen have a name in common with the accusers.
One of these names released was Paul Main, the name of a former sheriff deputy who had a recent Monday evening turned into complete chaos after this list was made public. His phone was bombarded with calls and his door step swarmed with TV crews, all wondering if he was the “Paul Main” on the list of the accusers. It appears the name “Paul Main” is shared by at least 20 other men in Maine. He has since spent the rest of this week trying to clear his name.

Although Wright may have just indicted this week, it appears she has been living a double life for years now. Wright opened up her “Pura Vida” Zumba studio in 2010, and shortly after small one-room office across the street.

That same year an anonymous blog appeared accusing Wright of not being that friendly Zumba instructor she portrayed to be. The blog’s creator is listed only as “stevens.” The only post “stevens” made was one in which he or she talked about the “double life” Wright lived, accusing her of being a “porn star” and having sex with married men.

Reports also show there were many photographs and videos with a woman identified as Alexis Wright of Kennebunk engaging in sex acts all over the internet.
Videos of a woman appearing to be Wright dancing naked in her Zumba studio have also been reported to have been over the internet.

Another blog, which was recently taken down, showed a woman appearing to be Wright in a featured photograph. The blog included a personal profile that read, “I live in a small town in Maine and have my own dance studio, and many in my community do not realize that I am an exhibitionist and that I crave sex. I have had sex with many of the married men locally and it is satisfying to know that I am providing them with what they are not getting at home. If the women only knew …”

According to a police affidavit, the police first began to investigate Wright after getting reports of men coming in and out of the facility at all hours of the day and night. The landlord of Wrights office space told investigators there had also been complaints of “moaning and groaning” coming from Wright’s office.
When the landlord checked her office himself, a massage table and a video camera set up on a tripod were found inside her office. He also told police he later found an online porn video of Wright that seemed to have been recorded in her office.

Kennebunk, Maine now anxiously waits for the remaining names on this list to be disclosed hoping none of their friends, neighbors, or husbands are among Wrights secret customers. This scandal is sure to grow larger as additional details unfold and, as Joel’s Father would say in Risky Business, “Sometimes you just gotta say what the heck.”

A mother in North Carolina was arrested last month for giving her 11 year old daughter a tattoo.
Odessa Clay, the 30 year old mother of the minor, claims her daughter asked for the tattoo herself. Clay, who is a part time tattoo artist, claims she taught it was okay for minors to get tattoos as long as they had parental consent.

The tattoo is said to be a small heart on the girl’s right shoulder. The mother claims the girl was not in pain, adding “I didn’t fill it in”.

Clay is due to appear in court next month facing a single count for tattooing a person under the age of 18. If convicted, she would be guilty of a class 2 misdemeanor, and face up to 30 days in jail, depending on her criminal history.

Although some states do allow minors to get tattooed with parental consent, North Carolina is not one of them. Including North Carolina, there are 45 states that prohibit minors from getting tattoos at all, consent or not. The reasoning behind this is that minors are not mature enough yet to make such drastic life-altering decisions on their own.

You would think a part-time tattoo artist would be well informed of their state law pertaining to their field.

It’s funny how much we change from our teenage years to adult hood. I used to love wearing corduroys and tie dye tees, and dying chunks of my hair different colors. I am definitely glad those styles and choices were not permanent! Let’s hope this 11 year old doesn’t have any regrets on her new permanent tattoo in a few years.

Would you let your child get a tattoo, or feel comfortable with them being surrounded by a society that allows other kids to get one? Share your thoughts with me!

Early medal counts from the 2012 Summer Olympics in London are in! With China jumping out to an early lead, and looking back at their amazing performance in 2008, could 2012 mark the end of 16 straight years where the United States captured more total medals than any other country at the Summer Olympics?

Since 1992, the United States has won the total medal count of every Summer Olympics. In 1992 we came in second behind Unified Team, a team comprised of former Soviet Union Republics. Four years earlier we came in third behind East Germany and the Soviet Union at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Since then we have outpaced all other countries, winning more overall medals. In 2008 China won more gold medals than the United States, but as the host country failed to capture more total medals.

If history is any indication of things to come, China is set to dominate medal counts at the Summer Olympics for many years to come. Take a look at medal counts from the past six Summer Olympics (Results from Wikipedia). Notice in 1996, when the United States hosted the games in Atlanta, our medal counts surged for the following three Olympics. After China’s hosting of the Summer Olympic games in Beijing in 2008, and their surge in medal counts there, it’s safe to assume they have an Olympics training program in place that will deliver outstanding results this year and for many years to come.
